The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This large vertical canvas has a glue lining and is secure on a keyed stretcher. The painted surface is largely flat and appears stable. Inspection in natural light shows unrestored losses along the extreme edges, most notably at upper right. Further scattered losses, many of which are filled, scattered across the surface, including: along the horizontal canvas seam running through the sitter's knees; a 19 inch loss running vertically from above the sitter's proper left ear down to his chest; to the left of the sitter's head, measuring approximately 11 by 5 inches, obscuring his proper right eye. Scattered areas of abrasions are visible across the surface, especially over the sitter's knees and ankles, and over the inscription at lower right. There are small strokes of restoration in the sitter's hands. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned areas of restoration and reveals some strengthening to the red table at lower left. Further inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by a cloudy varnish. The painting would benefit from restoration.
