Lot Essay

In keeping with the portraits of his father and grandfather (see lots 10 and 11), a Latin inscription on the present painting, which translates to, 'Count Charles, son of Marquis Orazio, born in 1625, prefect of the palace of the Most Serene Duchess of Modena, died in Brussels in 1683', identifies the sitter as Carlo, son of Orazio II Sessi and Lucrezia Bernieri. Carlo served Laura Martinozzi (1639-1687), Duchess of Modena and Reggio.
