The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This large canvas has a glue lining and is secure on a keyed stretched. The painted surface is largely flat and appears stable. Inspection in natural light shows unrestored losses along the extreme edges, especially along the lower edge. There are further scattered losses, many of which are filled, across the surface, including: a vertical line between the sitter's calves measuring 17 1/2 inches; a diagonal line in the sitter's left calf measuring 10 1/2 inches; and an area, measuring approximately 2 1/2 x 3 inches, in the sitter's proper right shoulder. The surface is abraded, especially in the darker tones including the sitter's torso, hat, and over the dog at left. A canvas seam is visible, running horizontally through the middle of the canvas. Under ultraviolet light, the varnish fluoresces blue in the background, including at lower right, around the sitter's head, and over the inscription. Further inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by a cloudy varnish. The painting would benefit from restoration.
