The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
We are grateful to Kirsten Younger for providing the following condition report (written communication, 29 September 2025):
A coating of thick wax is unevenly applied over the paint surface, and the aged varnish layer is discolored. The wax and varnish are opaque in UV light and obscure the paint and retouching making it difficult to assess the condition of the painting. Overall, it appears that there may be considerable thinness in the dark areas of the composition and that original details may be retained in some of the light-colored areas. The wax and varnish have been removed in several test areas revealing thinness and exposed light-colored ground in the hair and beard of Jacob and the faces of the angels. Whereas the shadowed areas of the heads appear flat and lack definition, some original brushwork is preserved in the light passages. Elsewhere, some of the details painted with light-colors, such as the impasto highlights of the angels’ draperies, and areas of Jacob’s colored drapery may be relatively well preserved. Broad retouching can be seen to the light cloth at the right of Jacob’s hand and other areas of the colored drapery appear to be strengthened. In the sky, there appear to be areas of liberal retouching, however craquelure is visible in some areas, an indication that they may be in somewhat better state, and some original white impasto may be retained in the clouds. In the trees, a small, cleaned area reveals thinness to the dark foliage. Some light-colored leaves appear to be preserved and some are retouched. Some small recent flake losses are scattered along horizontal cracks to the paint layer overall. The thick panel is flat, and it is in stable condition. It comprises two horizontal planks and a short crack that extends in from the left edge of the lower plank has some old insect tunnels along it on the verso. The painting requires cleaning before it can be exhibited, and extensive restoration would be required.
