Lot Essay

Signed and dated, the inscription on both front and back of this painting identify it as a gift from the painter to Lucrezia Bori (born Lucrecia Borja y González de Riancho), a Valencian soprano and descendent of the House of Borgia. Lucrezia's career brought her to the Metropolitan Opera of New York in 1910, where she appeared on stage 629 times before her retirement in 1936. Both a star and a stellar fundraiser, Bori was the first performer elected to the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Opera Association. She never married, and upon her death her estate was divided mainly between her brother and cousin, though she earmarked a sizeable gift for her secretary and companion, Miss Jennie Grazzini, which presumably included the present picture.
