The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is supported by a second horizontally-grained panel composed of a single thick board, which is beveled along all four edges. Along the extreme edges of the painted surface, there are minor losses and some scuffing. In natural light, a streaky varnish is visible on the painted surface. There are a number of filled, untoned losses, as seen in the catalogue image. Pigments in the proper left side of the Virgin’s neck and mantle have thinned, revealing a reddish ground. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals areas of restoration in the dark background, but is partly precluded by the uneven varnish. The painting can be hung in its current state, but might benefit from toning the filled losses.
