The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a vertically grained panel. The panel is supported on the reverse by two horizontal battens, each 3 5/8 inches from the upper and lower edges. The lower batten is loose in its joint. The paint layer remains stable. Minor scuffing and losses are visible along the extreme edges. There is a milky, uneven varnish across the surface. Examination is visible light shows two cracks in the panel: one running vertically at center, to the right of Christ’s head (measuring 1 inch in length) and the other running diagonally in the sky at center (measuring 3 1/2 inches in length). A white substance is visible on the surface in Christ’s cloak, to the left of his arm. The red ground is visible in the sky. Examination in natural light reveals some restoration in the sky at center right. Further examination is hindered by an opaque varnish. The painting can be hung in its present state.
