Joseph Drouhin, Beaune, Clos des Mouches Rouge 1968
Côte de Beaune, Premier Cru
U. 4cm. Excellent appearance. OWC

"Although 1968 does not have a particularly strong reputation as a vintage, the decisions made by my father, Robert, that year allowed us to produce a cuvée that, today, retains remarkable youthfulness and suppleness.
My father was able to adapt to the conditions of the vintage, which was, overall, very cold and rainy. The harvest proved to be extremely challenging, as the grapes were in rather poor condition at picking. Because I was born in March of that year, my father decided to carry out a rigorous selection of the grapes from Clos des Mouches to produce “my cuvée” a wine intended for me personally rather than for commercial release.
As a rule, the production of Clos des Mouches is vinified in ten small vats. That year, however, the entire selection was vinified in a single vat, which was subsequently aged in ten barrels.
At bottling, just one barrel was selected: the finest of them all.
It can therefore be said that this 1968 Clos des Mouches represents only 1% of the total cuvée.
I am very happy to share this jeroboam from my personal cellar.
At my most recent tasting, it displayed a beautifully brick-toned yet still luminous colour, with aromas of faded rose petals, liquorice and dried fruit. The palate was remarkably supple, with an exceptionally fine tannin texture characteristic of red Clos des Mouches, and a lovely, lingering finish."
