A Group of Nine Tsuba
Edo period (16th -19th century)
1. A round copper tsuba decorated in enamel and silver inlay with a hare beneath the moon, with a kao [cursive monogram]
2. A cusped lobed mokko shibuichi tsuba with nanako-ji ground, carved and inlaid in high relief with autumn flowers, copper, shakudo and gilt details
3. A rounded square copper tsuba carved in shishiai-bori [high and sunken relief] with a tiger and bamboo
4. A round iron tsuba, pierced and roundly carved with pine, signed Tetsugendo Okamoto Naoshige with gilt seal (later generation of Okamoto Naoshige)
5. A round iron Shingen tsuba carved and inlaid with copper, iron and brass
6. A round brass tsuba of ishimeji [stony eye] ground, carved and inlayed in silver and copper high relief with a bird and prey, the reverse with another bird in flight, signed Koretoku
7. An irregular round iron tsuba, carved in high relief with Jo playing sho (vertical pipe instrument) and Uba playing koto (Japanese harp) with pine, maple and bamboo, the reverse with another instrument biwa, silver and gilt details
8. A lobed copper tsuba of nanako-ji ground, carved with stylised floral design, with signature Goto Seijo
9. A round iron tsuba, carved overall with peripheral of cherry blossoms, with gilt centres
Sizes range from 6.1cm. – 7.4cm. diam.
