A Lacquer Kogo [Incense Box]
Edo period (19th century)
Decorated in gold, silver, red and black with various lacquer techniques including hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer], takamaki-e [high-relief lacquer] and togidashi-e [polished lacquer revealing a design beneath], the cover, sides and base with scattered folded and unfolded fans floating among waves, each with a different design, a thatched hut in a rural landscape, flowers including peony, plum, chrysanthemum and Chinese bellflower, the interior with a rich nashiji [sprinkled gold lacquer] ground, silver rims, tomobako with title Kamogawa [Kamo river] and signed Naosuke saku [made by Naosuke]
