The deep box and cover with indented corners decorated overall in various lacquer techniques including gold and silver hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer], takamaki-e [high-relief lacquer], togidashi-e [polished lacquer revealing a design beneath], nashiji [sprinkled gold lacquer] and kirikane [cut and inlaid pieces of gold leaf] with boats on a lake with Mount Fuji ascending in the background, a pavilion surrounded by pine trees in the foreground, the sides intricately decorated with a stream running through tree-lined hills, the lid opening to reveal a fitted inner tray similarly decorated with courtiers crossing a river in a ferry boat, the inside of the lid with iris flowers amongst a plank-bridge over a stream, the box interior decorated in dense nashiji, silver rims
