A Lacquered-Wood Standing Figure of Amida Buddha
Edo period (18th - 19th century)
Carved wood decorated in black lacquer and gilt, the figure standing on a lotus pedestal, the hair and forehead with glass byakugo [whorls of hair in the centre of the forehead], the eyes inlaid in colour-backed glass, the right hand raised and the left hand lowered with the palms facing outward, with the thumbs and index fingers in the yogan gesture, dressed in flowing robes decorated with various designs including flowers, karakusa, shippo, kikko [stylised turtle shells], scrolling clouds and roundels enclosing lotus flower
