Lot Essay

The eyes of Gruau's women are always a powerful and alluring element within his overall oeuvre and this figure's gaze fully encompasses this sentiment. In the early 1950s, Gruau made several visits to New York to work for 'Flair', a luxury magazine launched by Fleur Cowles. Upon becoming the exclusive artist for 'Flair', Gruau had the occasion of meeting several Hollywood film stars, most notably Diana Vreeland, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor, the latter of which Gruau often depicted with a blue-violet eyed gaze under a black hat.
