So taken with the beauty of Lago di Garda in Torbole in the 1780s, the writing of German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe led to a centuries-long tourist invasion. In his book Italian Journey, Goethe describes the fantastic views, the valleys and hills, and the exotic fig and olive trees growing along the lakeshore.
