This print inaugurates Motherwell's use of the Elegy to the Spanish Republic motif in his print work. The composition echoes that of numerous small ink-and-brush drawings from the mid-1970s. Motherwell decided to withdraw the edition from distribution after it was printed; he then hand-painted a small number of impressions with acrylic paint.
