Lot Essay

Motherwell's next two projects at Kelpra Studio, London, involved suites of screenprints that explored variations of the theme in vertical and horizontal formats. The work at Kelpra and simultaneously at ULAE on were new reflections on the surfaces and the inscribed rectangles of his paintings. In and , the planar field was created wihout complicated adjustments. Each series builds the format differently; in , the lines are etched and suspended from the top of the page plane; in , the lines are created by the edges of each successive screenprinting.
