Lot Essay
The 2001 Wimbledon Championships are often seen as providing tennis with a changing of the guard moment. A 19-year old Roger Federer, who hadn’t won a professional singles Wimbledon match since he claimed the boys title three years earlier, met the seven-time champion Pete Sampras in the fourth round and would go on to win in a five set thriller. The Swiss took the deciding set 7-5 to claim what was his biggest victory to date. Federer would go on to lose to home favourite Tim Henman in the quarter-finals but had made his mark on tennis’ grandest stage.
