Lot Essay
Although best known as an architect, Adam also made a series of drawings of castles, ruins, and capriccios influenced by Paul and Thomas Sandby, of which the present drawing seems to be one. He was fascinated by the idea of the Picturesque, and explored how it could be expressed through architecture. In drawings such as this one he explored the relationship between buildings and their settings, often not as direct design projects but as inspiration. Related drawings are at the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh. We are grateful to Timothy Wilcox for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The sheet is fully laid down onto the original washline mount, which in turn is hinged into a non-acidic mount. There is some very slight discolouration to the paper throughout and a few scattered foxmarks. The medium is good, the sheet is in good condition overall and could be hung without further attention.
