Sent to France as a war artist by Lord Beaverbrook in 1917, John made numerous drawings of Canadian soldiers such as this one, many of which are now in the Imperial War Museum, London. Lively and rapidly sketched, they have a powerful immediacy. We are grateful to Rebecca John for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.
