Lot Essay

Sir Robert Ponsonby Staples was born at Lissan, Co. Tyrone. He was a successful artist both in Ireland and London, regularly exhibiting at the Royal Academy, and was instrumental in the foundation of the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877.
Beresford, the younger son of the 4th Marquess of Waterford, was an admiral and MP. He later becaume the first Chief Sea Scout under the guidance of Warington Baden-Powell.
