Lot Essay

The enameller known as Master K.I.P., who was active around 1550, produced among other things small scale objects and casket plaques such as the one in the Louvre Museum (, inv. OA 3094). Some of his works were signed K.I.P, K.I., I.P. or I.P.K. in a white scroll. His style is atypical, with grisaille on a black background and the frequent use of very fine lines alongside small points to indicate the pupil of an eye. The precision in the present medallion plaque demonstrates his virtuosity.
