With a flat rim and deep well, standing on a low circular foot, an applied lizard at the center amid a blue and manganese ground, the flat rim molded in low relief with a border of formal foliage and scrolls colored in green, yellow and manganese, the underside with labels inscribed '426' and 'Einsatzstab R nr. 4103'

Confiscated from the above by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg following the Nazi occupation of France in May 1940 (ERR no. R 4103).
Recovered by the Monuments Fine Arts and Archives Section and transferred to the Munich Central Collecting Point (MCCP no. 113/2).
Returned to France on 9 January 1946 and restituted to the Rothschild family.

Lot Essay

A similar dish, formerly in the collection of baron Gustave de Rothschild, then by descent with Sir Philip Sassoon and the Countess of Rocksavage, was sold at Christie’s, London, 26 November 1919, lot 53. It is now preserved in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (museum no. C.141-1933) and illustrated in Léonard Amico, A la recherche du Paradis Terrestre, Bernard Palissy et ses continuateurs, 1996, no. 98, p. 115. A dish of the same model without a lizard in the center is kept in the Musée national de la Renaissance, Ecouen, France.
