Lot Essay

This chest closely relates to the 16th century German Kunstkammer cabinets. Decorated in the round, this was conceived as both a cabinet to hold one's collection of curiosities, opulent jewelry and other treasures, but equally to be admired for its ornate decoration. A related period example is in the Museum of Decorative Arts (Kunstgewerbemuseum) in Berlin (inv. no. K 2776 a).
