In the shape of a Corinthian column on a square pedestal with masks in relief on a marbled blue ground, the underside with a printed label from the Exposition Rétrospective de 1900 with the inscription Bon Alphonse de Rothschild, as well as labels inscribed ‘P. 48 /E. de R./81’ for Édouard de Rothschild, ‘R.F. 4156’ and a label with the number 453

Confiscated from the above by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg following the Nazi occupation of Paris in May 1940 (ERR no. R 4156).
Recovered by the Monuments Fine Arts and Archives Section from the Altaussee salt mines, Austria, and transferred to the Munich Central Collecting Point, 23 June 1945 (MCCP no. 340/3).
Returned to France on 9 January 1946 and restituted to the Rothschild family.

Lot Essay

As noted by Alfred Tainturier in 1863, no other example of this model is recorded. A candlestick in the form of a column with an Ionic capital was acquired by the Musée du Louvre in 1825 with the collection of Edmé Antoine Durand (1768-1835), see Louis Courajod, La Collection Durand et ses séries du Moyen âge et de la Renaissance au Musée du Louvre, 1888, p. 42, no. 117 and Gaston Migeon, Catalogue des faïences françaises et des grès allemands, Musée du Louvre, 1901, no. 129.

Sold with thermoluminescence certificate N123b60 dated 6 March 2023 from Oxford Authentication Ltd., stating that the samples tested were last fired between 300 and 450 years ago (1573-1723).
