Lot Essay

Pogédaïeff's character portraits were created for the 1923 production of Modest Mussorgsky's (1839-1881) opera Khovanshchina at the Liceu, Barcelona. Mussorgsky died before he could complete the score for the opera, and the version used in the production was completed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908).
