Lot Essay

The present icon was commissioned by the officers of the Chevalier Guard regiment and presented to their commanding officer Vladimir Bezobrazov for the birth of his daughter Elizabeth (1902-1996) on 23 August 1902.

Having graduated from the Page Corps in 1877, Vladimir Bezobrazov fought in the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-1878. Whilst serving with Nicholas II in the Life Guard Hussars, Bezobrazov forged a close friendship with the Emperor. After the Revolution of 1917 Vladimir Bezobrazov and his family, including his daughter Elizabeth, emigrated to Denmark and later to France. The present icon features St Zachary and Elizabeth, the patron saints of the Chevalier Guard Regiment who are depicted on its standard.
