Lot Essay

A comparable bronze model is part of the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, where it was labelled as a portrait of Madame Botkina. The confusion lay in the identification of the subject, for there are two women with the surname Botkina that this sculpture might reference.

It has been suggested that the sitter might be Maria Pavlovna Botkina (née Tretyakova), who was the daughter of the renowned art collector Pavel Tretyakov. However, it is also possible that this is a portrait of Maria Sergeevna Botkina, an artist and daughter of the famous clinician and professor Sergey Botkin. For more information about this work, see Exhibition catalogue, Paolo Troubetzkoy 1866-1938, Verbania, 1990, p. 148, no. 87.
