Lot Essay

With a score by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) and based on a poem by the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837), Natalia Goncharova's costume and set designs for the ballet Le Coq d'or are among her most renowned and acclaimed contributions to theatre design for the Ballets Russes. Goncharova electrified the theatre world with her innovative set designs which combine the flatness of icon painting with the vibrant and abstract patterns of peasant embroidery, thereby demonstrating her mastery of the medium and her distinctive creative vision.
