拍品专文

Born into a military family, Field Marshal Count Ivan Gudovich was sent by his father abroad to study at the University of Königsberg and the University of Leipzig, later joining the army in 1759 as a military engineer upon his arrival in St Petersburg.
Gudovich was a talented officer who distinguished himself during the Polish campaign of 1764, the Russo-Turkish wars of 1769-1774 and 1787-1791 and the Russo-Persian wars in 1798 and 1803-1813. In 1789, he succeeded in taking the citadel of Hacibey, which was later renamed Odessa.
Owing to his strong administrative skills, during his long military career he held the positions of Governor-General of Kiev, Governor-General of Astrakhan, and Governor-General of the Caucasus, among others.
He retired in 1812, receiving a jewelled portrait badge with a miniature of Emperor Alexander I in thanks for his service.
