Lot Essay

The kvas jugs in the Russo-Byzantine style were produced at the Imperial Glass Factory after designs by Ippolit Monighetti, a Russian architect who worked in the Russian Revival style. Examples from this extensive service, including the present kvas jugs, were exhibited at the London International Exhibition of 1862 and illustrated in the official exhibition catalogue. For other comparable examples, see T. Malinina, Imperial Glass Factory 18th - early 20th centuries, St Petersburg, 2009, pp. 253-260.
