Lot Essay

Annunciation belongs to the body of biblical works by Vladimir Ovchinnikov, a subject which the artist repeatedly addressed in his oeuvre from the mid-1970s onwards. The artist's diary describes his work on several versions of the composition. According to the diary, Ovchinnikov worked on 'a small rectangular version of Annunciation' from the 6 to 12 September 1977.
It is possible that the present painting is the one described in this line. The industrial landscape in the background can be found in a number of paintings from those years and relates to the sketches made by Ovchinnikov during his trip to Kemerovo in 1976. Creating murals for the church's vaults was the main objective of that trip, yet also organically influenced the subject matter of his work from that period.
We would like to thank Mikhail Ovchinnikov for providing this catalogue note.
