Lot Essay

The style of engraving on the instrument is typical of the Louvian school of scientific instrument makers in the late 16th century. A previous antiquarian has (probably) erroneously attributed these by adding the name of Michel Coignet (1549-1623), the inventor of an early and obscure form of sector called the 'reigle plate' which would have been used in conjunction with an instrument such as this. Unsigned Louvain instruments are notoriously difficult to attribute to a maker with certainty, but there are strong similarities in the numbering and lettering to the extant examples of the work of Adian Zeelst (c.1545-1624).
