Lot Essay

This photograph shows the crescent earth rising above the lunar horizon. The lunar module, from which the photograph was taken, is 240,000 statute miles from the earth and less than 60 miles above the moon.
The terrain below is approximately 100E longitude and 10S latitude on the far side of the moon.
The lunar module thruster is visible in the lower field of view. (Caption on recto.)

“I don’t think any of us ever tired of looking out the window and watching the world or the Moon go by,” observed Charles Conrad. “One of the best things that our photography has done is come close to giving people down here an idea of what the hell it looks like from up there” (Schick and Van Haaften, p. 40).
