INITIAL 'S' on a leaf from a gradual [Lombardy, final quarter 14th century]
The leaf comes from a gradual, a manuscript collation of the sung portions of the Mass, opening the introit for the Feast of St Paul. The bright palette of pinks, blues and greens is typical of northern Italian illumination of the period.

•Private collection, London.

422 x 291mm. Initial 'S' opening the introit for the Feast of St Paul 'Scio cui credidi [...]'. Contemporary foliation 'lviiii' in red.
