A LEAF FROM A LARGE ENGLISH MISSAL [England, first quarter 15th century]

English illuminated manuscripts are rare on the market, and this is a fine example of a high-quality production. The text of the present leaf contains the beginning of the Ordinary of the Mass.

Provenance:
A note in the upper corner reads: ‘This leaf was given to me by Mrs Welton, at Olney, 3 Aug. 1886. H.G.’. This is likely the same HENRY GOUGH who had in 1870 written extensive notes on manuscripts in the Bute Collection (Sotheby’s, 13 June 1983).

Measurements:
420 x 270mm. 2 columns of 33 lines, written space: 350 x 230mm.
