VIRGIN AND SAINTS, initial ‘P’ cut from a bible [Paris, 2nd half 13th century]
The quintessential 13th-century illuminated manuscripts are Paris bibles: from one such example we have an historiated initial showing the Virgin and Saints that would have formed part of a busy iconographical narrative. The style of illumination is derived from that of the early Parisian Moralised Bible ateliers at the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th centuries, while the use of burnished gold suggests a prestigious commission.
