Lot Essay

Mined and prized for millennia, lapis has been used throughout history as a decorative stone -- from the funerary mask of Tutankhamun through to being ground up to use as (an extremely expensive) pigment in the Renaissance.
Lapis with a colour as deep as the present example are normally broken and used for the jewellery industry, and it is thus rare to see a specimen of this quality and size.
