The sloop Aurora was owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt III (1873 - 1942), who served as Commodore of the New York Yacht Club from 1906 to 1908. The yacht was a one-design sloop by Nathanael Herreshoff (1848 - 1938), originally a 57-footer but extended to a 65-footer early in 1909. The races of 13 and 14 August, 1909, marked the conclusion of the season, are were to Rockland and Bar Harbor. The following year, 1910, Aurora won the Astor Club for Sloops, the Bennet Cup for Sloops, the Newport Cup and the King's Cup (from John Parkinson, Jr., The History of the New York Yacht Club, New York, 1975).
