Since its founding in 1807, the Ascot Gold Cup was and still is Britain's most prestigious race for horses racing over long distances. It is traditionally held on Ladies' Day, the Thursday of Ascot Week. The 1963 race was won by Twilight Alley, bred by the stud of Sir Victor Sassoon, 3rd Bt., G.B.E. (1881 - 1961), and owned by his wife Evelyn Barnes (b. 1921), Lady Sassoon. In July of that year, Twilight Alley competed in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, but was injured and never raced again.
