Cartouche-shaped and on four scroll feet, boldly cast with fruit and foliage scroll borders, applied with the arms of The Grocers' Company to the front flanked by griffins and surmounted by a later removable finial cast as a camel crest, underside with wooden support, marked on border and stamped R & S GARRARD. Lot Essay

Further plateaus and centerpieces from the Grocers' Company Service by Garrard, dated 1842, were sold at Sotheby's, London, 28 July 1977, lot 477 and 478. They later formed part of the Al Tajir Collection and were exhibited Christie's, London, Glory of the Goldsmith, 1989, nos. 171(i) and (ii). An 1877 centerpiece jardiniere by R. & S. Garrard & Co. was sold Sotheby's, New York, 15 October 2015, lot 146. Robert Garrard became a freeman of the Grocers' Company in 1816 and was Master in 1853.
