Lot Essay

In 1869, the Khédive Ismail spent vast amounts of money on building and decorating various palaces to host the thousands of guests and particularly the Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoléon III, whom he invited to celebrate the opening of the Suez canal.

The present jardinière is reputed to have been part of the items ordered by the Khédive Ismail from Charles-Nicholas Odiot to decorate one of his palaces for this occasion.
