Lot Essay

The model for these wine coolers is a pair of wine coolers by William Lukin, which were commissioned by Sir Robert Walpole, Britain's first Prime Minister, in 1716 for the dining room at Houghton Hall. They are now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Acc. No. 68.141.128 and 68.141.129)
