The inscription reads: To Professor Bonamy Price. FROM H.R.H. Prince Leopold December 1875.

Professor Bonamy Price (1807-1888) was a renowned lecturer of political economy at Oxford. Prince Leopold (1853-1884), the youngest son of Queen Victoria, was one of his students.
