The four figures presented here are based on statues at the Hofkirche in Innsbruck, Austria which surround the cenotaph of Emperor Maximilian I (1459 - 1519). Built in 1553 by Maximilian's grandson Emperor Ferdinand I (1503 - 1564), the memorial cenotaph in black marble took more than 80 years to complete. In addition to the 24 reliefs depicting events from Maximilian's life, the cenotaph is surrounded by 28 bronze statues created between 1502 and 1555 which represent various ancestors, relatives, and heroes related to Maximilian based on designs by various artists. The present lot includes King Rudolph I (1218 - 1291), the first Habsburg king of Germany, designed by Gilg Sesselschreiber and his workshop in 1516, Duke Leopold III of Austria (1351 - 1386), designed by Jörg Kölderer in 1519, King Philip I of Castille (1478 - 1506), Duke of Burgundy and briefly the first Habsburg king of Castile, designed by Gilg Sesselschreiber and his workshop in 1516, and Bianca Maria Sforza (1472 - 1510), Maximilian's third wife, designed by Ulrich Tiefenbrunn in 1525.
