Modeled in the Renaissance Revival taste with drum-form body and stepped circular cover, the bowl inscribed EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE INTERNATIONALE MDCCCLXXVIII.PARIS. within a rectangular panel, the bulbous lower section with pâte-sur-pâte ribbon-tied festoons of fruit on a gilt ground, above an elaborately knopped stem similarly decorated, on a stepped circular base, with allover bands of powdered gilt scrolling foliage

This cup was presented as an award of excellence to the premier laureate group of decorative arts at the l'Exposition Universelle of 1878. The form was designed by Edme Couty and was known as the Prix de Sèvres.
