Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale was born in January 1864, the oldest child of the then Prince and Princess of Wales, later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandria. As his brother Prince George of Wales was only 17 months younger, the two were largely raised and tutored together, including extensive travels as naval cadets. Despite rumors of homosexuality which persist to this day, Prince Albert Victor was engaged to Princess Victoria Mary of Teck in 1891. A year later, though, Prince Albert Victor fell ill with influenza and died on 14 January 1892.Princess Victoria Mary would go on to Mary his brother Prince George, later King George V.
