Lot Essay

Interesting F.Frick National League baseball which originated from the personal collection of Cincinnati Reds pitcher Si Johnson. The ball was used in game between Johnson's Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Braves and Babe Ruth. Inscribed in period black ink on side panel, "First Ball against Babe Ruth 1935." Several autographs are present on the baseball including Johnson. Goodman, Riggs, Pool, and Herman ranging from 2-6 out of 10. Johnson pitched against Ruth twice that season with this ball appearing to have been thrown during the May 27, 1935 contest and includes period news article regarding same which had remained with the ball. Although the exact result of the pitch to Ruth is unknown we can be sure it was not a hit. Accompanied by 1995 handwritten letter from Si Johnson's cousin, Lee Johnson, confirming the history of the ball and LOA from JSA regarding the autographs: VG-EX
