Early Lithographic Plate Book on Mexico
George Francis Lyon, 1827
LYON, George Francis (1795-1832). The Sketch Book of Captain G.F. Lyon R.N. during Eight Months Residence in the Republic of Mexico. No. 2. London: J. Dickinson, 1827.

First edition of an exceedingly rare and early lithographic plate book on Mexico. In 1826, British naval officer Lyon, especially remembered for his exploits in Africa and the Arctic, traveled to Mexico as commissioner of the Real del Monte Mining Company. His journal, published a year after the present work, is one of the best nineteenth-century accounts of Mexico. Lyon's Sketch Book is one of the outstanding and little-known plate books on Mexico. It comprises no. 2 only; no. 1 of the series included another five plates. Gunn, Mexico in American & British Letters 895; Palau y Dulcet 14403; Sabin 42854.

Folio (386 x 276mm). Lithographed contents page and five lithographed leaves of plates, uncut (lightly toned). Publisher’s grey lithographic wrappers (a few closed tears; paper spine worn and frayed).
