VILLAGUTIERRE SOTO-MAYOR, Juan (fl. 1701). Historia de la conquista de la provincia de el Itza. Madrid: Lucas Antonio, 1701.

First edition, first issue, of the official chronicle of the Spanish conquest of Petén. Villagutierre Soto-Mayor was the official chronicler for the Council of the Indies, with access to the vast colonial archives in Seville. He produced this popular account of the Itza people in Guatemala and their conquest by the Spanish. Issue with uncorrected catchword. Sabin 99643.

Folio (296 x 202mm). Title printed in red and black. Engraved frontispiece, woodcut initials and ornaments (marginal paper repairs to final few leaves; some browning and dampstaining). Contemporary vellum with renewed endpapers and ties (recased, with several small repairs). Provenance: Joaquín Cortina Goribar (1906-1991, Mexican historian; bookplate).
