STOKES, Isaac Newton Phelps (1867-1944). The Iconography of Manhattan Island.New York: Robert H. Dodd, 1915-28.

Limited edition, one of 360 sets on English hand-made paper. Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes was a housing reformer, real estate developer, and architect from a prominent and wealthy New York family. The Iconography of Manhattan Islandwas one of his lasting legacies, the result of his enthusiasm for collecting prints. Includes laid-in typed letter signed by Stokes dated 28 Dec. 1915 regarding “the well-deserved tribute to Mr. [Edwin B.] Holden contained in the Preface to my book.” Howes S-1026.

Six volumes, quarto (278 x 210mm). Numerous illustrations. Original mottled roan, top edges gilt (rebacked in mottled calf preserving original spines, some wear, with leather flaking on spines); cloth slipcases (worn). Provenance: Alice C. Holden (bookplate and laid-in letter).
