Niels Bohr (1885-1962).

Photograph signed (‘Niels Bohr’) and inscribed to Lewis Strauss, n.p., n.d. [c.1950s].

Gelatin silver print, 254 x 201mm (slight toning). Mounted (355 x 279mm).

A rare signed photograph of Niels Bohr, inscribed to the chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, Lewis Strauss (1896-1974). Bohr’s work on nuclear fission had brought him to the attention of the businessman, public official, and naval officer Lewis Strauss; the two had first made contact in 1939 – the year that Bohr and John Wheeler published their paper ‘The Mechanism of Nuclear Fission’, exploring a theoretical basis for Otto Hahn’s discovery – at the time that Strauss was financing Arno Brasch’s development one of the first particle accelerators.
